- Make sure the trimmer is switched off and unplugged.
- Unscrew the head of the trimmer by turning it anticlockwise.
- Remove the head by pulling it off of the shaft.
Taking the Stihl String Trimmer Head Off
If you’re looking to take the Stihl string trimmer head off, there are a few different techniques you can use.
One way is to remove the hex key that’s holding it in place.

Removing the Blade

3 If your old blade is still attached to the spindle, remove it now. If not, put your new blade on and screw it into place using the two screws you removed earlier.
4 Now reattach the head by tightening the screws you just installed. Be sure to test your trimmer before you finish up—you don’t want to damage your grass while replacing the blade!
Putting the Trimmer Back Together
- Disconnect the spark plug wire from the trimmer head.
- Remove the two screws that hold the trimmer head to the shaft.
- Pull the trimmer head off of the shaft.
- Remove the four screws that hold the housing to the frame.
- Remove the housing from the frame.
- Inspect andclean any debris that may have entered between the motor and gearbox during disassembly, or from use on vegetation. If necessary, apply a light coat of oil to these components before reassembly.
- Reattach the housing to the frame, replace the four screws, and reconnect the spark plug wire.
